Smart Grids in India: Separating Hype from Hope

What are Smart Grids? There is no single technology or design, but these are a general term for the transformation of the power grid using digital communications and control to enable functionalities such as increased awareness, resiliency, flexibility, efficiency, and enhanced renewables integration. Definitions and functionalities abound, but for India, the killer apps are likely to be different. In the West, labor costs for meter reading and connections/disconnections have been one driver, in addition to pressures due to renewable energy and electric vehicles, as well as concerns on handling the peak on aging infrastructure. In India, the short-term needs include reduction of losses (both technical and financial) and keeping the grid in balance (especially given shortfalls). Crompton Greaves bags contract to supply equipment to PGCIL

Avantha Group firm Crompton Greaves Ltd has bagged a contract from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd(PGCIL) to supply six sub-station automation systems (SAS) in Jharkhand. The value of the contract has not been disclosed. Crompton Greaves' automation business unit would supply sub-stations while its engineering projects division would manage them, a statement issued here said. >>Read More

AP seeks Centre’s backing for renewable energy projects

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has agreed to consider a proposal of Andhra Pradesh Government to support its efforts in strengthening the evacuation network for renewable energy projects, including wind farms.During a meeting held here between State Special Chief Secretary Energy, M. Sahoo, and Ratan P Watal, Secretary, MNRE, the latter agreed to consider the request State’s request to provide matching grant in aid for a comprehensive evacuation network of about 3150 mw wind power plants in Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur and Rangareddy districts.>>Read More
